Harbour Lights Limited Edition #242
On September 27, 1998, while the anxious citizens of Pascagoula boarded their windows and escaped with their precious belongings, Hurricane Georges descended upon the Gulf Coast with a vengeance. When the winds died down, the tropical storm left behind a trail of devastation, including scores of ravaged homes. In addition to the destruction of homes and businesses, Georges also destroyed a precious piece of history, the 139-year-old lighthouse on Round Island.
Round Island is a small island located off the coast of Pascagoula in the Mississippi Sound. The first lighthouse at Round Island was erected in 1833. The current tower was completed in 1859 and fitted with a fourth order Fresnel lens. Rising 44 feet off the water, the light was visible for fourteen nautical miles.
Volunteers from the Round Island Lighthouse Committee are already hard at work, trying to find a way to rebuild the sentinel.
