  
The normally warm and inviting Gulf waters near Texas draw mariners to its depths, seeking the bounty of fish. Oysters, growing popular in restaurants, became a much-sought treasure. But their sharp shells are embedded deeply in the sandy shoals, forming a jagged and perilous hazard for passing ships. In the waters of Matagorda Bay lies a series of oyster shell shoals, Half Moon Reef.
