The Atocha tragically ended her voyage on a reef of the Florida Keys on September 6, 1622, taking with her 264 souls, many of whom were of royal blood. She scattered over 47 troy tons of treasure over 50 miles of ocean bottom. Only 5 people survived the wreck. Mel Fisher spent over 20 years searching for the lost Atocha treasure. He spent years trying to get others to invest in his dream- fighting off bill collectors, power and utilities cut-offs.

The largest tragedy of the search was the death of Mel's son Dirk, Dirk's wife, and another crew member who died when his salvage boat "The Northwind" sank over the wreck site on July 20, 1975.

All of Fisher's hard work finally paid off though, and you can now own an authentic piece of the treasure he found that is over 365 years old!
